Bureau of Land Management

The BLM, a leader in wildland fire management, conducts a broad range of actions to protect the public, natural landscapes, wildlife habitat, recreational areas, and other values and resources. The bureau’s national fire and aviation program, BLM Fire, which focuses on public safety as its top priority, consists of fire suppression, preparedness, predictive services, vegetative fuels management, community assistance and protection, and fire prevention through education. To meet its wildland fire-related challenges, the BLM fields highly trained professional firefighters and managers who are committed to managing fire in the most effective and efficient manner.

As the largest and most complex fire program within the Department of the Interior, BLM Fire is directly responsible for fire management on more than 245 million acres. This land is commonly intermixed with other federal, state, and local jurisdictions, making partnerships and collaborative efforts crucial to the mission of safety and fire management. Overall, BLM Fire implements fire protection on approximately 650 million acres of public land with other fire management agencies.

BLM Fire, located at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, manages program budget at a national scale, sets policy and program standards, and works closely with the DOI’s Office of Wildland Fire, DOI sister agencies, the USDA Forest Service, state and other organizations.

As we count down to National Wildland Firefighter Day on July 2, meet Brianna Sanders, lead dispatcher at the South Idaho Dispatch Center with Bureau of Land Management - Idaho. Brianna started her fire career on an engine crew in ... 2011 and also served at the Twin Falls Helitack base. After a few years away to raise her young family, she returned to fire in a new way, coordinating logistics behind the scenes. In dispatch, Brianna tracks critical resources during incidents, filling orders for crews, equipment, and supplies, booking travel, managing agreements, and supporting large fires when local needs surge. “Dispatch is a highly functioning, very busy area of fire,” she says. “We’re a nimble group, adapting quickly as things shift.” Though long hours at a desk look different than long hours on the fireline, her drive to serve the fire community hasn’t changed. “The camaraderie and ability to help others is my favorite part of what I do every day.” BLM Idaho Fire #NationalWildlandFirefighterDay #NWFFD

Ten years ago, the wildland firefighting community lost a beloved friend and co-worker, Terry “Tyke” Sonner. Tyke worked for the BLM Idaho Fire program. Tyke received an associate degree in fire science from UNLV and was ... served 14 years as a BLM Fire employee. He worked in areas that covered Twin Falls, Idaho; Elko, Nevada; and Boise, Idaho. Tyke had been promoted to superintendent in June 2015 and then relocated his family to Wendell, Idaho, when he accepted a position at the Hammett Guard Station. Firefighting was at the top of many passions he had. His memory and spirit will continue to shine.
